Small Business Award Winner

Leigh Marshall from Marshall Electrical was a Small Business Awards $5K recipient and prize winner of the $10K Nick Middendorp Small Business Award in 2019. Find out how the win benefited Leigh and his business and how you can be a winner too...

Marshall Electrical has been operating since 2013 in the NSW town of Deniliquin. The business employs four locals who have either completed, or nearly completed, their apprenticeships. Leigh’s dad is also involved in the business, having worked in the construction industry for 50 years and then being coerced out of retirement to come and join Leigh. Leigh's wife Charmaine helps out with admin and bookwork and is a key strategist behind business decisions. The combination of job satisfaction and the sense of fun that Leigh’s team brings to all of their jobs makes the business both successful and rewarding.

With Marshall Electrical focused mainly on residential, commercial and rural electrical, as well as evaporative AC installation and maintenance, Leigh used the funds won through the Small Business Awards to help extend the business into solar, based on there being a gap in services in the local area with only a limited amount of solar operators. The funds paid for the Marshall team to complete Middy's accredited Solar Grid Connect and Solar Storage courses, giving them the skills and expertise to undertake new solar projects both for their own customers, and as sub-contractors to large solar companies.

In addition, the grant enabled Leigh to fully kit out a company ute for solar use, with custom racks to transport solar panels and storage for other solar equipment. These investments have helped grow Leigh's business substantially, having now employed two new apprentices and with plans to further expand the workforce by training and employing someone to do fire compliance. The business has also grown to now service outlying areas such as Shepparton and Echuca.

Leigh applied for the grant through his local branch at Deniliquin and gives a special shout out to branch manager Stacey O’Dwyer who suggested Leigh apply for the grant and was extremely helpful. Leigh advises the application process was quick and easy only taking about half an hour. He suggests to just be honest, add what it is about your business that makes it unique and state how the money could genuinely help your business grow.

So if you think you could do with $5K, $10K or even $15K for half an hour of your time then get on board and apply for the Middy’s Small Business Awards.
